Tim Adams: Australian Barista Champion

Tim Adams is the Australian Barista Champion of 2009. Crowned by his peers as Australia’s number one barista in February, 2009, Adams has proved to the nation and showed the world that he is Australia’s best. Paul Basset, World Barista Champion 2003, was his inspiration to get into a competitive spirit. Adams started competing in May, 2008 and hasn’t looked back since.
Putting in about 25-30 hours per week for seven months before the Australian Barista Championship in Queensland, Adams’ motivation never slowed. His main motive was to raise the awareness of the barista on the Sunshine Coast, but he also wanted to go out and meet coffee professionals, roasters and other people who love coffee just as much as he does.
Adams was not afraid to push himself out of his comfort zone, which is what eventually led him to his success. He was able to compete in Atlanta, Georgia for the title of World Batista Champion and came in 13th out of over 50 world-class baristas. His advice to other baristas who want to follow in his footsteps is to “only start competing for the right reasons. If it isn’t something that you want to do, then don’t do it just for the sake of it”.
